GR Federal Reserve Challenge Team's Paper Published
Posted on 06/25/2024

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York recently announced the results of this year’s High School Fed Challenge, an academic paper competition in which student teams researched and analyzed an economic theme, then wrote podcast scripts reflecting their research.

Congratulations to The GRHS Federal Reserve Challenge team members and their script, “Sheconomics: Beyond Plastic─Barbie and Women Shaping the Workforce,” for being named one of only 12 winners out of 80+ total submissions! This year’s team included (L-R) Sophie He ’25; Saanj Selarka ’25; Virginia Liang ’24; Ms. Una Kearns, advisor; Jordyn Amram ’24; Noah Fintzy ’25; and Michael Witmer ’24.

Ms. Kearns, academic advisor and AP Macro and AP Micro teacher in the Business Department, explained that the team members initially faced the challenge of narrowing down a topic for their academic research and then determining how to present this dense economic research in an entertaining and engaging podcast. “This year, our team chose to research the impact on the economy from women joining the workforce since 1960,” she detailed. “They did it in a podcast interview between Greta Gerwig, the director of the ‘Barbie’ movie, and Barbie, who was a guest on her podcast.”

Glen Rock’s script will be published in this year’s Journal of Future Economists, which will be published this summer.
